XL Hybrids wins Massachusetts contract

Ford E-350 hybrid shuttle to be used by non-profit.

Boston, Massachusetts – XL Hybrids Inc. has installed of its XL3 Hybrid Electric Drive System in a Ford E-350 shuttle bus for Door2Door Transportation by SCM. The non-profit promotes the independence of seniors and persons with disabilities through community-based transportation.

Massachusetts Clean Energy Center (MassCEC) funded the project through InnovateMass, a competitive program that provides awards to applicant teams that offer the most innovative and impactful clean energy solutions to tough energy and environmental problems in the Commonwealth.

Tod Hynes, president and founder of XL Hybrids, says “The InnovateMass grant allows us to support Door2Door’s valuable community service. Our charge-sustaining hybrid electric powertrain is not only eco-friendly – reducing CO2 emissions by 20% – the system also lowers total cost of ownership for truck, van and shuttle bus fleets.”

The Door2Door shuttle bus will provide a 25% increase in miles per gallon and reduce nearly five tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually.

“Our 27-member fleet is highly visible in the communities we serve as we take our riders to medical appointments, grocery shopping, adult daycare, meal sites, and excursions,” explains John Keegan, interim executive director of Door2Door. “We serve a population that will increase by 40% by 2020 and 100% by 2030. Our goal is to meet that demand with increasing flexibility and quality of service. XL Hybrids’ technology and programs such as InnovateMass allow us to continue serving the most vulnerable citizens in our communities.”
