Dassault Systèmes buys simulation content company

Modelon GmbH Modelica-based models used to simulate electric vehicle systems.

Velizy-Villacoublay, France – Dassault Systèmes has purchased Modelon GmbH, a producer of ready-to-experience content for systems modeling and simulation – areas that software provide Dassault has called strategic to transform the transportation and mobility industry.

In the context of the Internet of Things, smart, connected objects such as autonomous driving systems are increasingly showing their potential to change consumer lifestyles, yet their highly intricate and interconnected systems must seamlessly work together to do so. Electronics are expected to comprise 50% of vehicle development costs by 2030, and the number of electric vehicles worldwide is predicted to reach 12 million by 2021.

Modelon GmbH’s multi-physics, modular, and reusable content – based on the Modelica open standard modeling language – delivers functional mock ups. From electric power storage to electric power distribution, it delivers a unified picture of complex product subsystem interaction and performance. This accelerates virtual product development.

“Since 2009, our industry-proven content implements the latest advances in Modelica tools and standards and, as a result, has enabled major industry milestones,” says Johannes Gerl, CEO of Modelon GmbH. “As part of Dassault Systèmes, we can expand the reach and impact of our assets to inspire electrified and ecologic product development that will be emblematic of the bright future of experience-based systems engineering.” Bernard Charlès, president and CEO of Dassault Systèmes, says, “With our 3DEXPERIENCE platform and strong and growing ecosystem of content partners, we now look to replicate Modelon GmbH’s success in other industries such as aerospace, energy, process and utilities, and construction.”

Dassault Systèmes has long supported the use of the Modelica modeling language for the complex systems engineering at the core of the company’s flagship brand CATIA. The acquisition of Modelon GmbH reinforces its commitment to design smart products in the age of experience, following the acquisitions of Geensoft embedded systems development solutions in 2010 and Dynasim’s Modelica-based modeling and simulation solutions in 2006.
