Los Angeles, California – The U.S. Air Force plans to unveil the Department of Defense's first non-tactical vehicle fleet composed entirely of plug-in electric vehicles (PEV) Nov. 14.
It is the first vehicle-to-grid (V2G) project of this size in the United States. The base's entire non-tactical fleet will be swapping to electric vehicles.
California energy providers and regulators worked closely with the Air Force on safety and performance testing as well as technical and regulatory aspects of launching the fleet. For the Air Force, these V2G/PEVs offer capabilities to enhance daily operations, as their ability to export power enables a variety of mission capabilities.
In addition, the vehicles serve as a low-cost mobile power source and an outlet to increase energy security ensuring installations can continue their mission in the event of an energy crisis.
