Cashew nut shell liquid (CNSL) – A byproduct of the edible cashew market, the shell encapsulates the nut, and both sit under the inedible cashew apple on the plant. Once extracted, the shell’s oil (CNSL) is a viscous, dark reddish-brown liquid that has several industrial uses.
Extraction process – After removing the edible cashew nut, shells are placed between layers of permeable materials and mechanically pressed with a hydraulic or screw press.
