Oil collected from cashews expected to hit $450 million market value by 2026.
Cashew nut shell liquid (CNSL) – A byproduct of the edible cashew market, the shell encapsulates the nut, and both sit under the inedible cashew apple on the plant. Once extracted, the shell’s oil (CNSL) is a viscous, dark reddish-brown liquid that has several industrial uses.
Extraction process – After removing the edible cashew nut, shells are placed between layers of permeable materials and mechanically pressed with a hydraulic or screw press.
7.3% projected compound annual growth rate (CAGR)
Motor vehicle CNSL applications
• Laminating, epoxy resins
• Rubber compounding, rubber cement
• Dark-colored anti-corrosion primers, coatings
Material advantages
• Anti-microbial
• Acid-resistant
• Rust-proof
$171.2 million projected North American CNSL demand by 2026, 38% of global industry
