NFPA member profile: HAWE Hydraulics

Emissions rules and electrification trends in commercial vehicles fuel innovation in hydraulics.

About half of lift trucks sold in North America feature battery-powered electric drives to cut emissions, and governments in the United States and Europe are pushing for stricter emissions rules on diesel-burning equipment. Officials with North Carolina’s HAWE Hydraulics say fluid power can help both groups of commercial vehicle operators increase power while minimizing emissions.

“With lift trucks with electric drive, overall efficiency becomes even more important,” says Bob Pettit, corporate technical director, HAWE Hydraulics North America. “This opens the door for load-sensing type systems to provide load independent, multi-function control while minimizing wasted energy and maximizing efficiency.”

With giant construction cranes and off-highway equipment, the inclusion of work vehicles in U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) emissions regulations has been rippling through suppliers such as hydraulics companies.

“EPA Tier 4 engine regulations and talk of a potential Tier 5 requirement are a large source of concern for mobile OEMs. These regulations require extensive machine redesign,” Pettit says. “Highly efficient designs and load sense technology, allow the OEM to maintain machine performance while meeting the new regulations.”
